About CPT Colombia

Magdalena Medio Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) Colombia works together on grassroots initiatives to expose and transform structures of domination and oppression through active nonviolence in order to make possible the reign of God -a world grounded in respect, justice and love, even of enemies.

The Team is based in and has a long history of working in the Magdalena Medio region, although in recent years we have also begun to do occasional accompaniment in other parts of the country.

Prayer Request

Today we received news of yet another massacre perpetrated against the indigenous community of the Awá of Nariño. The National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC) affirmed that on February 11 an unknown armed group massacred 10 members of the Awá community while they were trying to flee their ancestral land. This follows the events of February 4, when it appears that members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) murdered 17 members of the indigenous Awá people. In addition to these victims, 3 more people disappeared and remain missing after they tried to rescue the bodies of their relatives.

These are not isolated cases of aggression against the indigenous peoples of Colombia. In October and November of 2008, the Colombian army attacked the Indigenous Minga, killing three and leaving 130 injured (see http://www.cpt.org/cptnet/2008/12/30/colombia-indigenous-continue-walk). In December 2008, the Colombian army also assassinated the husband of Aida Quilcue, a recognized leader of the indigenous movement.

COLOMBIA URGENT ACTION: Evangelicals and Catholics march for peace in San Pablo; leaders request letters regarding assassination

CPT has asked San Pablo community leaders how the public can support their movement for protection of fundamental human rights.  The San Pablo leaders request that the international community apply pressure by sending written appeals for an investigation into the death of Edgar Martinez Ruiz, the other victims of assassination, and the death threats made against human rights organizations.  The leaders wish to receive these letters by email so they can personally deliver them to the authorities.  The team requests that you send these letters before 14 July 2009, so that a CPT delegation in the country at that time may also participate in delivering letters.
